Clinical Services/Referrals

Current Research Studies > Pathokinesiology Research

The Pathokinesiology Service accepts referrals for clinical testing to diagnose abnormal joint motions and muscle activity patterns that limit the ability to walk in persons with neurological and orthopedic disabilities. Clinical testing is also performed to assess upper extremity function.

These quantitative tests provide physicians and therapists information necessary to devise individually-appropriate treatment plans to improve function.

Detailed reports may include recommendations for surgery, lower extremity bracing, nerve and muscle block as well as customized therapeutic interventions.

TYPES OF CLINICAL TESTS:

  • DYNAMIC EMG
    Lower extremity gait
Upper extremity (during wheelchair propulsion or ADL).

  • KINEMATICS
    Vicon motion analysis.
    Electrogoniometry.

  • FOOT
    Compression closing foot switches.
Footpressure using the EMED Pedar system.

  • FORCE
    Kistler force plates.
Force walking aides (walker, cane or crutches).
    LIDO isometric or isokinetic dynamometry.

  • ENERGY COST
O2 and CO2 analysis with Douglas bag technique.

  • WHEELCHAIR
    Force wheelchair with wheelchair ergometer.

  • REPORTS
    Detailed reports provided.
