Project Threshold helps individuals with physical disabilities solve task performance problems through the use of assistive technology or environmental modifications. Individuals who are having difficulties at work, at school, or at home with independent living skills are candidates for the services of Project Threshold.
Evaluations of work and school sites and of technology needs for home and independent living are provided by professionals experienced in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Engineering. Each evaluation involves a task analysis and assessment of the consumer’s functional abilities and limitations. Most evaluations are conducted at the client’s work, school, or home, enabling the identification of environmental factors that need to be considered when researching solutions. Project Threshold is able to provide mobile services through the use of two vans outfitted with evaluation equipment. Additional services include custom modification of equipment, preparation of reports with detailed recommendations, and follow-up.
Project Threshold provides services to clients throughout the state of California. More than 6,000 persons have been served during its 27 years of operation. Most of the clients come to Project Threshold through a case service contract with the State Department of Rehabilitation. Initially awarded in 1977, this contract has been renewed every year since. The current agreement with the Department of Rehabilitation has been increased from a one-year term to three years. The high regard that the Department of Rehabilitation holds for Project Threshold is exhibited by the long-standing and ongoing nature of this contractual relationship. Additionally, Project Threshold provides services to clients from various other state and federal agencies, insurance companies, employers, and self referred individuals.
Project Threshold practitioners individually and collectively have many years of experience in the area of rehabilitation. In addition to providing evaluation services to consumers, these staff members have been involved in various disability related research projects and presented at major technology and rehabilitation conferences. Currently, the physical therapist on our staff serves as the mobility and home modifications resource specialist to the California Foundation for Independent Living Center’s AT Network.
